Resting in the Truth That God Has Not Forgotten You
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” Isaiah 49:15-16
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Every human has the same core needs. Among those, we all need to feel seen and heard.
Because we were made in God’s image, and He is, within Himself, an intimate relationship (three in one), we also deeply long for—and require—being seen, heard, and known. Understood.
Yet the Fall introduced division, separation, and conflict between those who should love one another. The biblical term is enmity. This separates us from God, humanity from creation, and people from each other, or even a person from himself or herself.
Therefore, we all feel unseen, unheard, unknown, and forgotten. We feel overlooked. This might be real or imagined, but to some degree, the division and distance are always at least partly true. Feeling forgotten results in temptations toward despair and depression. We question our own worth and value. We can often feel lonely and alone in a crowd of people.
Thankfully, we have a gift. If we turn to God, we experience what we long for. God hears and sees and knows all things. And being God, he can give each one of us his full attention. He never forgets us. He always remembers us because He loves us.
The prophet Isaiah expresses this to us. Even if everyone else forgets us (unlikely but possible), the greatest being of all never will. Speaking of Israel and specifically Jerusalem as a people, God uses the intimate and loving image of a mother and child to relate His compassion for His people. Further, He describes the unchangeable nature of His covenant and love as if He engraved it on the palm of His hands.
How precious. Our Father never forgets, always remembers, and always loves us. He has us on His mind.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for seeing me, hearing me, and knowing me completely. When I feel overlooked, forgotten, or alone, remind me that I stay continually on your mind. Silence the lies that make me question my worth or your love. Bring me into the security of being fully known by you. Help me rest in your compassion and trust your immutable promises. Let your faithful love heal my loneliness and teach me to help others feel seen and heard.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. What are some situations where you currently feel unseen or unknown? Forgotten?
2. How could you engage with Christ and experience his love and care for you?
3. What are some ways you can help others in your life feel seen and heard?
Reflect on tonight’s prayer and share how God met you there. Join the Your Nightly Prayer discussion on the Crosswalk Forum.
